At Ocean Orchards, we use permaculture principles to grow a variety of fruits and vegetables naturally. Our goal is to create a balanced, self-sustaining environment that supports many different plants and keeps the soil healthy. We plant different crops together, which helps them grow better. For example, we grow legumes (like beans) that fix nitrogen in the soil alongside vegetables, and goumi berries next to fruit trees for the same purpose. This reduces the need for artificial fertilizers. Our planting methods help produce many types of fruits and vegetables that grow well together.
We focus on improving the soil to help our plants grow strong. We use compost to recycle nutrients back into the soil. We rotate crops and plant compatible plants together to naturally control pests and diseases, so we don’t need to use many pesticides. By supporting insects and helpful microorganisms (like worms), we create a healthy environment that encourages strong plant growth and good harvests.
At Ocean Orchards, we follow natural cycles and change our farming practices with the seasons. We use minimal tilling to protect the soil’s structure and moisture, which benefits the plants by not breaking up mycorrhizas as well as saving effort. By working with natural rhythms and promoting biodiversity, we grow tasty, healthy fruits and vegetables that reflect the natural balance of our permaculture farm.
We also take requests from customers, so if there is a particular plant that you want us to grow, be sure to put it in the chat. (There are many plants that we can't grow because it is outside of our growing zone, which is 8b.)
